About FormatBox
FormatBox is a free, privacy-first image converter. Open images saved in newer formats — like AVIF, HEIC, WebP or JXL — that older software cannot read.
Every conversion happens entirely in your browser using your device's own capabilities. Your images are never uploaded to a server, which makes the tool fast, private and free to run.
Supported formats
| Format | Full name | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AVIF | AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) | AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It offers much better compression than JPEG or PNG at the same quality, which is why it is increasingly used on the web and by newer phones and cameras. |
| HEIC | HEIC/HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) | HEIC is Apple's default photo format on iPhone and iPad since iOS 11. It saves a lot of storage, but many programs, web forms and older devices cannot open it. |
| WebP | WebP (lossy/lossless) | WebP is Google's image format that supports both lossy and lossless compression. It is widely used on websites, so images you save from the web often end up as .webp and cannot be opened by older software. |
| JPG | JPEG/JPG | JPEG (or JPG) is the most common image format. It compresses photos well and is accepted almost everywhere, making it the safest choice for sharing, uploading and printing. |
| PNG | PNG (lossless) | PNG is a lossless image format that preserves sharp edges and transparency. It is ideal for screenshots, logos, diagrams and graphics with text. |
| TIFF | TIFF/TIF (tagged image file) | TIFF is a high-quality format used in printing, scanning and photography. Because it is large and not supported by many web apps, it often needs converting before use. |
| JXL | JXL (JPEG XL) | JXL (JPEG XL) is a modern image format that combines better compression than JPEG with true lossless support. Newer browsers such as Safari 17+ open it natively, and it is designed to gradually replace JPEG. |
